Recreation Program

Who can play?

Recreation teams are organized by BYSA and include players from Pre-K through 5th grade. Pre-K includes any child that is at least 4 years old prior to the first practice. Practices for all teams, and most games for Pre-K through 2nd grade occur during the week, while games for 3rd through 5th graders generally take place on Saturdays. All schedules are based on the number of teams, along with coach and field availability. Pre-K and kindergarten teams are co-ed, while 3rd through 5th grade are based on gender.

All matches occur in Byron with other BYSA teams. Games are not scheduled with other clubs. The number of teams per grade level is determined solely by the number of registrants.

Pre-K through 2nd grade will practice 1 day per week, while 3rd grade through 5th grade will have 2 practices each week. All ages play 1 game each week. Seasons are 6 weeks long.

When does the season start and end?

The 2024 Spring Rec season will run from early May through mid-June.  All practices and games are held at the Byron Soccer Complex.

Who coaches Rec League?

Our coaches are all parent volunteers.  No previous soccer experience is required for coaching Rec League, especially at the youngest ages.  We provide training for our coaches, so all you need is a willingness to jump in and help out with our young players!

Do coaches need a background check?

Our coaches and assistant coaches are all required to complete three pre-requisites.  (1) Background check (2) Concussion training and (3) SafeSport training.  We realize that this takes some of your time, but we are required by state and federal law to have our volunteers complete these requirements.  We highly recommend that each team have at least one coach and one assistant that has completed all three requirements.

At least one adult who has completed all three requirements must be present at every practice and game.

Special note regarding make-up games

Occasionally games must be cancelled due to inclement weather.  Please be advised that we may not have referees available at make-up games because it is difficult to find coverage.

Our Recreation League teams are coached by parent volunteers.  If you are willing to coach, please sign up when you register your child.  Training will be provided via a Coaches Clinic, access to our Coaching Director, lesson plans, drill ideas etc..

We are not looking for experts.  We are looking for volunteers that are willing to give their time, and provide a positive environment all the while teaching these young players the basics of soccer and how to be a team player.

**The quicker volunteers sign up to coach, the quicker rosters can be formed and schedules can be released**

Questions can be directed to Recreation Directors.
